So tonight Sherman Alexie came into the bookstore I work at. Luckily I didn't embarass myself and gave him his privacy. (Only to be shattered by me writing about it as a big news event here.)
I first saw him at a Native American cultural center in downtown Philly when
Indian Killer came out. When asked who he writes for, he said, and I'm paraphrasing because this was about six years ago, he said, "First, myself. Second, other Native Americans, and third, everyone else. In that order."
I'm still impressed with this answer. And with his books. I love handing someone Reservation Blues. Most people know Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, but haven't hit Blues. And it really shows how acutely funny his writing is.
