On Saturday a customer came back into the store. I recognized her immediately and the books she bought last time. She originally wanted The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. We talked about the book and I mentioned the effect it had on me when read in high school. (I took away the control individuals can have on their own lives, if they have the courage to stand up for what they believe and not listen to everyone around them. Never really got into the cult of Ayn Rand phenomenon, though.)
Anyhow, when I saw her I had a brief thought that maybe she read the Fountainhead and didn't like it at all. I later asked her how she liked the books. She suprised me by saying she'd not got to Rand yet, but By the River Piedra Where I Sat and Wept was an incredible read. She mentioned the similarities between the book and her life at the moment, and thanked me for putting her in touch with it.
Wow. One of my first return customers and she liked the book I handsold her, more than the one she originally came in for. Good stuff.
