Today Terry at the bookstore gave me a good lesson in bookselling. We were talking about paperback release dates for the upcoming Peace Like a River and the nature of the book. I said we'd sell a lot at Christmas, and he observed that more customers will want hardcovers for gifts. Peace might be better as something special for the customer to keep for him- or herself.
He then told me about Empire Falls, which he liked and I didn't. He enjoyed handing it to people because most male readers will like the story, particularly if they don't read a lot of fiction. It was another example of how I need to look at individual customers, find out their tastes and what they look for, before I make a book recommendation.
So much to learn on this path to becoming a bookseller.
