Today's meeting with the folks at Scala House Press went well. I'm going to learn more about what they're doing, and hopefully can give them some tips on how to boost their marketing with the web. And they can help me learn more about the publishing side and how it can help me with bookstores.
After talking with them, I had an idea for booksellers and editors to get together more to discuss the books. Would it work to get a small group of Northwest book people together, say 10-12 people, made up of both groups: A few editors from 2 or 3 presses, and a few booksellers. They'd agree to talk about 4 or 5 recent books put out by the editors. The editors would talk about why they chose the books, what the editing process was like, any interesting anecdotes from their process. The booksellers would then talk about why the book does or doesn't sell in their store, what they like from the book, what they'd like to see more of. And hopefully everyone would feel more informed about the other side of the fence.
We could easily meet someplace like Hugo House, or even the events room at one of the bookstores.
