argh, why can't I leave things be? why, why?

Here's a letter to
Focus on the Family in search of a Christian-approved Classic Book Reading List. If anyone knows of such a beast, please send it my way!!!

Hi [Focus on the Family],

...I work as a bookseller in Seattle. Tonight a customer came in asking for recommendations on classic literature books she could teach in her classroom. The parents at her school are very vocal about not wanting controversial books taught to their high school students.

Does Focus on the Family, or another Christian-centered group that you know of, put out a list of acceptable "classic" literature books? I tried recommending what most high school students read (1984, Brave New World, Midsummer Night's Dream, Hamlet, SlaughterHouse Five, Scarlet Letter, etc.), and all of them had scenes or words that might be found objectionable.

I imagine I'm not the first to run into this problem and hope you folks can help me help this customer. I'm also curious for my personal knowledge and for future customers.

I personally support Banned Books Week and feel that high school students can have great discussions about classic books, particularly ones that contain controversial scenes that will spark in-class discussions and deeper understanding. But I respect the position this teacher is in, and would like to find her some selections that parents won't object to her teaching.

Thanks, in advance,
Jay
