From today's PW Daily:
Congratulations! Bunch of Grapes Is PW's Bookseller of the Year
Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven, Mass., on Martha's
Vineyard, has won Publishers Weekly's 2002 Bookseller of the Year
Award.
Founded by Ann Nelson in 1975, the bookstore is open year round and
stocks a full range of books as well as cards, stationery, magazines,
newspapers and toys. Bunch of Grapes also has a thriving autograph
program that has featured, over the years, Walter Cronkite, David
McCullough, Alice Hoffman, Barbara Kingsolver and William Styron,
among many others.
The store serves year-round residents as well as the many summer
people who flock to this famous resort island. Martha's Vineyard also
has many visitors, most notably, in recent years, former President
Bill Clinton, whose trips to Bunch of Grapes were widely written up.
Owner Ann Nelson has been active over the years in the New England
Booksellers Association and was a board member of the American
Booksellers Association. She has written about bookselling and taught
at booksellers' schools. She expresses pride in staff, saying that the
store "what makes the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore such a popular
destination has a lot to do with its loyal staff. Their knowledge and
recommendation go beyond the bestseller list to those sought after and
undiscovered literary jewels. They care about book lovers, book
browsers and the free flow of ideas."
A feature story about Bunch of Grapes will appear in the May 5 pre-BEA
issue of PW. Ann Nelson will be honored at BookExpo America in Los
Angeles.--John Mutter
