BOOK PASSAGE MARQUEE EVENTS

I'm a fan of the events series at BOOK PASSAGE in Corte Madera, CA. here's some highlights from their latest calendar:

Ursula Hegi Thurs., Jan. 8, 7:00 pm
Ursula Hegi talks about her novel Sacred Time ($25.00). Evoking all the optimism of post-war America, this novel spans three generations, taking us from the Bronx of the 1950s to contemporary Brooklyn. While observing the dark side of family life—as well as its gracefulness—Hegi reveals how the transforming power of a singular event can reverberate through a family for generations. With gravity and grace, Hegi turns her keen yet forgiving eye on the essential frailty and dignity of the human condition in this elegant, fast-paced novel. Hegi is the author of Stones From the River.

Tracy Chevalier Sat., Jan. 10, 1:00 pm
Tracy Chevalier talks about The Lady and the Unicorn ($23.95). Bewitching art experts and enthusiasts alike for centuries, the Lady and the Unicorn tapestries hang today in the Cluny Museum in Paris. Chevalier takes readers back to the tapestries’ creation, giving life to the men who designed them, as well as the wives, daughters, and servants who exercised subtle (and not so subtle) influences over them. Chevalier’s books include Girl With a Pearl Earring.

Roger Housden Tues., Jan. 13, 7:00 pm
Roger Housden talks about 10 Poems to Set You Free ($15.00). Housden has chosen poems by Thomas Merton, David Whyte, Miguel de Unamuno, Anna Swir, Stanley Kunitz, C.P. Cavafy, and Jane Hirshfield, as well as three of his old favorites: Rumi, Mary Oliver, and Naomi Shihab Nye. Housden complements each poem with an essay that helps us integrate the poet’s truth into our lives and focuses on how enthusiasm, creativity, and the courage to hold on to our principles can unlock the door to authenticity and set us free. Housden’s books include Ten Poems to Change Your Life, Ten Poems to Open Your Heart, and Chasing Rumi.

(from Jay - Mr. Housden is an incredibly charming and friendly author. He really impressed me at a reading he did at Third Place Books in Seattle, WA.)

Gavin Menzies Thurs., Jan. 15, 1:00 pm
Gavin Menzies talks about 1421: The Year China Discovered America ($15.95). On March 8, 1421, the largest fleet the world had seen sailed from its base in China. Their mission was “to proceed all the way to the end of the earth to collect tribute from the barbarians beyond the seas” and unite the whole world in Confucian harmony. When they returned in October 1423, the emperor had fallen. Lost in China’s long, self-imposed isolation that followed was the knowledge that Chinese ships had reached America 70 years before Columbus.

Mark Kurlansky Fri., Jan. 23, 7:00 pm
Mark Kurlansky talks about 1968: The Year That Rocked the World ($26.95). It was the year of sex, drugs, and rock & roll. It was also the year of the Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy assassinations; the tumultuous Chicago convention; the anti-war movement; Black Power; the beginning of the end for the Soviet Union; and the birth of the women’s movement. Kurlansky brings to life the cultural and political history of that world-changing year. Kurlansky’s books include Salt and The Basque History of the World.

Susan Vreeland: Lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco
Tues., Feb. 24, 12:00 noon
Benefit for the National Kidney Foundation of Northern California
Enjoy a special lunch with Susan Vreeland, as she talks about The Forest Lover. It was Emily Carr who first blazed a path for women artists. Overcoming the confines of late Victorian culture, Carr became a major force in modern art. In her latest novel, Vreeland brings to life this fiercely independent and underappreciated figure. Vreeland is the author of The Passion of Artemisia and Girl in Hyacinth Blue.
This is a benefit luncheon for the National Kidney Foundation of Northern California. The price of lunch and book is $85. To reserve call 415-927-0960 x239 , or email events@bookpassage.com .
