FEBRUARY 11, WEDNESDAY, NOON ART & FICTION
The Forest Lover
The much anticipated return visit of Susan Vreeland with her new novel marks a highlight in our events calendar. After warmly received, insightful and moving presentations at Eagle Harbor Books on behalf of Girl in Hyacinth Blue and The Passion of Artemisia in past years, Vreeland brings the fictional account of artist Emily Carr, whose spirit dwells north, just across the border. Accompanying her reading, Vreeland will show slides of Emily Carr’s work. Make a space on your calendar for the special date and time of this event. (See the article further down this email for more info on Emily Carr.
FEBRUARY 12, THURSDAY, 7:30PM NW CUISINE
Tom’s Big Dinners: Big-Time Home Cooking for Family & Friends and Tom Douglas’ Seattle Kitchen
In what promises to be one of the most luscious evenings we’ve ever hosted, world-renowned chef/author/restaurateur Tom Douglas offers his passion for the local ingredients, ethnic traditions, and diversity of the Northwest culinary landscape. The evening will include not only a bounty of innovative cooking ideas, but drawings for his books, spices, sauces and rubs. Dungeness Crabcakes with Green Cocktail Sauce, anyone?
FEBRUARY 19, THURSDAY, 7:30PM GOOD BOOKS
Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment, & Reason
Book groups take note! Nancy Pearl, who directs the Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public Library and happens to be one of our favorite book talkers (she even has her own action figure!—seen right), makes a most welcome return visit with a book that promises to serve as an invaluable resource. Consisting of over 100 thematic categories—for example, mother-daughter relationships and stories with dogs—Pearl’s book provides the perfect answer to every book lover’s dilemma: what to read next. Rescheduled from October 2.
FEBRUARY 20, FRIDAY, 2PM BIRDING
The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, & Fowl Obsession
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mark Obmascik will make a “fly-by” appearance at the store to sign his new book, the account of three men who compete for sighting the most American bird species in one year, a contest that resulted in an extraordinary record: 745. This is Morley’s favorite book so far this year!
FEBRUARY 26, THURSDAY, 7:30PM TRAVEL
Rick Steves’ Provence & the French Riviera, 2004. Continuing one of our most cherished traditions, Steve Smith , co-author of the “Europe Through the Back Door” series, makes his yearly return, this time with a slide show illuminating the best ways to enjoy the beauty of a region whose attractions include Avignon, Arles, Nice, and Aix-en-Provence. “. . . a low-cost, low-to-the-ground style that not only saves money, but gets you closer to the real Europe, the way Europeans see it.” ~ San Francisco Chronicle
