Book Jobs

The PublishersMarketplace.com job board has some choice offerings this week. Random House looks to be on a mini hiring binge. HarperCollins, Penguin, and Princeton Univ Press also have openings.

I'm all for booksellers making the jump into publishing. The more indy booksellers we have in New York, the better!

If you're a regular, please think about using the Comments section on this site to post job openings at your bookstore, that you hear about, or if you're looking for advice on a new area or store. I'll also serve as a conduit if anyone wants me to keep an eye out for a job.

Speaking of which, there are two people in the Seattle, WA and Milwaukee/Sheboygan area that are looking for book or library jobs. If anyone knows about anything please shoot me an email. Thanks!

And while I'm on the subject of bookstore jobs...this would be the time to resubmit an idea that came from Autumn S. at Third Place Books...What if there were a bulletin board for booksellers to swap jobs for a working holiday? You work at their store, and vice versa. This isn't a slight against our profession, but realistically we can probably go a week with someone else handling the basic duties. The benefit of getting ideas from another store would outweigh the time away. Plus, it would be an enticing and unique perk for bookstores to offer their employees. (Autumn has willingly volunteered herself to go first and swap with anyone working in the UK.) Stores would pay either your regular salary or slightly lower proportion. The booksellers could either swap living arrangements, too, or each person would be responsible for hotel. The online bulletin board would operate independently (possibly at AnthemBooks.com if there's enough interest) and only serve as a tool for posting messages, kind of like a college ride board.

What does everyone think?
