Ruminator Owner Talks Shop

David Unowsky, owner of Ruminator Books, talks about the ups and downs during his thirty year run as a bookstore owner. Good stuff in here, including the three big mistakes he made and the importance of having a solid business incorporated into the larger ideas behind opening a bookstore.

My favorite quote is at the end:
"Despite the closing of Ruminator, Unowsky doesn't think independent bookstores are dead.

"A new generation may start over with the equivalent of the way we started — with poetry and macrame," he says. "They will be better business people than I was.""

and here's Unowsky's own words on his store and the closing (via Bookselling This Week), including, "For those who think it's inevitable that independents will disappear and that the retail world will all be big chains, I say humbug and hogwash. Plenty of booksellers have made the necessary transitions to survive and to thrive, and the next generation will be smarter business folk."
