Links in Brief

Here are some book places that have caught my eye recently:

Booktastic!
- a new board game based on book collecting. Players move around a quaint town square of bookstores to buy, sell, and trade books according to a collection card they receive at the beginning of the game. It sounds like a great gift item to carry for the holiday season. Published by a new outfit out of Sacramento, CA.

Vertical - web site and blog for a relatively new publisher of Japanese novels in translation. And they have Chip Kidd designing every cover. A quote on the site about their origin:
"Five years ago, an energetic, chain-smoking Japanese entrepeneur named Hiroki Sakai arrived in New York with a new and bold (and some said crazy) idea: to market Japanese popular fiction in North America. Sakai was not what one would call a literary man, nor did he speak much English. Yet he knew the book-selling business in Japan and was confident that Japanese literature could be commercially successful abroad... A good story, after all, was a good story anywhere..."
