Bookstore Tourism Update
Latest Press Release from Larry Portzline at Bookstore Tourism:
September 27, 2004
Dear Friends,
With "Bookstore Tourism" ready to hit the bookshelves this Friday, October 1st, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who's been so supportive over the past year or so. The response has been overwhelming, and I deeply appreciate the enthusiastic e-mails I've received -- not just from the U.S. but from around the world. I've heard from booklovers, booksellers, educators, librarians, authors, publishers, travel professionals, and many others. It means a lot to me, and it gives me hope that Bookstore Tourism, as a concept and as a book, will succeed. So, my sincere thanks to everyone -- especially those who have helped to spread the word!
A few updates:
If your local independent bookstore doesn't have copies of the book yet, I'm sure they'll be happy to order it for you. It won't take long to get, and it'll encourage them to keep more in stock! (U.K. distribution for Europe will start soon.)
Also, because the book is listed in Books in Print and is being distributed in the U.S. by Ingram, you may notice that it's available from the major chain bookstores and online booksellers. It's a Catch-22, but if the chains want to promote the indies by selling my book, so be it. It's poetic justice!
I'll be doing some radio shows in the very near future, including "The Book Guys," which is heard in about 40 cities around the country. Their website,
www.bookguys.com , includes recent show archives, so if you can't get it in your town, you can listen on the web.
I'm planning to embark on a "mini-tour" of the Southwest U.S. in early December -- to some well-known indie bookstores in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Then, after the holidays, I'd like to visit other regions of the country, including the Pacific Northwest and the Southeast. Watch the website for dates and locations!
Meanwhile, I'll officially launch the book this Saturday, October 2nd, at New York is Book Country in Greenwich Village. My booth will be located on Thompson Street, just below 4th Street, so if you're in town, be sure to stop in between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. (Malachy McCourt will be in the booth next to mine at 2 p.m. signing copies of his new book! He's on the wagon, so feel free to bring ME a Guinness.)
Also, on Sunday, October 10th, I'll be at Barbara's Bookstore in Oak Park, Illinois (Ernest Hemingway's hometown just outside Chicago) at 3:30 p.m. I'll offer a brief talk about Bookstore Tourism, do some Q&A and sign books. We'd love to see you there!
Then, on Saturday, October 16th, I'll lead a "Harrisburg Area Bookstore Adventure" right here on my home turf for PHASE, a local literary publication that's tapping into Bookstore Tourism as a fundraiser. We'll hit seven indie bookshops in the community (including a brand new co-op with over a dozen book vendors), have lunch at a local farmer's market, and cap it off with a buffet reception and author reading at an independent movie theater in Harrisburg.
Finally, on November 6, I'll lead a bookstore trip to Charlottesville, Virginia for Harrisburg Area Community College. A local bookseller and the University of Virginia Press have teamed up to schedule a couple of author appearances just for our visit!
Do these excursions sound like fun? Consider organizing a bookstore road trip where you live, or to your favorite bookstore town!
Thanks again for your interest, and remember to support your local indie bookshops! Tell a friend!
Best wishes,
Larry Portzline
