PNBA Notes

My friend Cheryl McKeon of Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park, WA writes her reflections on the recent Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Fall trade show. (Cheryl is a book club guru and master bookseller. I worked with her at TPB a couple years ago.)

The Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE) attended the show and is making connections with the indepenedent bookstore community. I'm a big fan of the BALLE organization, having attended one of their conferences while living in Seattle. They focus on how communities can forge relationships among local business owners to keep more local dollars in the community instead of seaping out of the community. It opened my eyes to the power of knowing how your local economy works. An example they used is a college cafeteria program making a choice to use local growers for their food. The cycle includes local students paying tuition money for the meal plan, that money used by the cafeteria to buy local produce, and then growers using the money inside the local economy for their expenses. If done properly, it creates a tight loop for money to stay in the community and protect itself. Beautiful.
