Oligopoly Watch
I was reading old posts on the blog and came across a reference to Fresh Samanatha juices. These were my favorite beverages when I was in NY, particularly anytime I was visiting Portland, Maine.
I naively thought they were still plugging along in the New England region. Nope. They were acquired by Odwalla, then Odwalla was acquired by Coke. Then Coke phased out the Fresh Samantha brand. So it goes, I guess.
The silver lining to the tale, is the discovery of Oligopolywatch.com. The site tracks how companies get devoured by other, usually larger, companies until the industry is dominated by a few players. The site's owner is working on economic theories related to oligopolies and uses the site to collect info and news. From their "about us" page, "I am developing a theory about how and why big companies keep growing bigger, and some of the dynamics behind their moves."
Good stuff.
