Random Links

Lots of surfing lately, here's what's turned up on my radar:

- Bookselling This Week (BTW) reports on a new Tatnuck Booksellers location outside Worcester, MA. Larry Abramoff, the owner, is on my list of smartest bookstore owners in the country. He's very savvy about opening new locations and spending money on creating atmosphere.

- Also in BTW, a piece on Lee Booksellers in Lincoln, NE. I remember when they first signed up for BookSense.com, Linda is one of the most polite people I've ever met. (Bookseller trivia...she's also the daughter of the founder of Cliff Notes.)

- This is going to the vault...Lizzie Skurnick wrote a great little ditty on all of us who work from coffeehouses. It's from early 2003, but still plays well. Doesn't wireless internet feel like a sci-fi movie? Every time I enter a coffee shop, I case the joint looking for an electrical outlet and a "free wireless" sign. It's like a scene from Blade Runner, though usually not as dark and rainy. I have a stack of frequent visitor cards from cafes all over Madison. I'm starting to collect them in the cities I go to as well. It's ridiculous.

- I'm checking out the services at Bloglines and Friendster. Bloglines seems like a good introduction for anyone looking to try out RSS feeds. This is the direction blogs are going so we can all consolidate all of the blogs we regularly read. Don't get me started on the Friendster thing. I've avoided it successfully all this time. I'm not against it, I just knew I'd be addicted faster than Courtney Love in a shooting gallery. Sure enough. All of my college friends got on it and now I'm a friendster too. Damn. Don't do it, you'll probably feel slightly dirty in the morning.

- Pictures are up from the blog gathering at Housing Works last Friday.

- Dan Wickett emailed me this link to a great interview with Fred Ramey and Greg Michalson, founders of Unbridled Books. It gives the backstory about what happened with Bluehen Books, their shortlived imprint at Penguin.
