Random Links
Candler Hunt, the Phaidon DC/Southeast sales rep and former bookseller at Olsson's, sent me these great links...
Detroityes.com - Anyone who has run screaming from downtown Detroit knows how bad the scene is there. It's a textbook example of corporate business capital abandoning a major city center and leaving the residents holding the bag. Now there are so many problems that it's hard to sort out how to fix it. This website, though, is a great place to start looking. By documenting the ruins of Detroit online, the site creates an amazing dialogue for people inside the city, and for the rest of the world to see what is going on here. They have created an active message board to share ideas and pass on news to each other. Amazing.
IanRankin.net - website for the Edgar Award winning Scottish author. I mentioned him a few days ago on a visit to the Book Stall. Cool author site, he offered a contest for one person to become a character in his next book. To enter you had to make a donation to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. Nice idea!
JasperFforde.com - Fforde is the author of The Eyre Affair, which started his Thursday Next series of comic literary mysteries. I think Fforde is the next heir to the Douglas Adams throne of quirky, comedic British writers. His website certainly makes it seem so. I love the Seven Wonders of Swindon, which include the controversial Elgin Llamas ("One of the more visible members of Swindon's spectacular urban wildlife, the demand from Peru for their immediate return is hotly contested by the City Council.")
Thanks for the links, Candler!
It's been awhile since I checked in at my bloglines account. Here's a roundup of interesting posts or links at neighborhood blogs...
Bookdwarf posts a link to Doug Seibold's article asking why the returns policy persists into the 21st century?
Book Angst 101 talks to author Tom Dolby about the experience of going on a Virtual Book Tour, a new marketing idea from Kevin Smokler.
