Bookstores and Community

Here is the owner's opening letter to the Northshire Bookstore March email newsletter:
Dear Friend of Northshire Bookstore,

As Town Meeting Day approaches, I am thinking a lot about community. What is a regular part of the Vermont winter is not common in our country any more. Discussions and debates about taxation, school funding, roads, what is happening in Montpelier, the library, etc. are important, if sometimes frustrating, activities. We are lucky to be able to discuss these issues in an open way in a free and civil society.

Promoting strong communities is an important part of what being a small business is all about. Most independent businesses are paying taxes to the town and state, supporting employees who spend time on local boards and who volunteer, and donating to the many worthy silent auctions and fundraisers. At Northshire Bookstore we are also trying to bring books to you which are relevant to your everyday life and the decisions you make which affect your neighbors. Whether about personal enrichment, politics, farming, community development, science -- any topic you can think of -- there is so much to read! Please stop in (physically or virtually) and browse away…
