Gain One, Lose Two
Today's Publisher's Lunch has three links regarding independent bookstore openings and closings.
The saddest news for me is that one of Seattle's children's bookstores, Hullabaloo Books, is closing. This store was definitely a work of inspiration for the owners. I visited near their opening and loved the atmosphere they were creating in a small space. It's a shame the store isn't going to be there anymore. The West Seattle neighborhood is a tough area for books. It seems like there would be enough people to support a store. It's one of the more isolated parts of the city, separated from the downtown by an industrial shipping yard and the Puget Sound. Argh. This leaves the legendary All For Kids bookstore as the place for kids books in Seattle.

Annie's Book Stop is a used-book store in Vallejo, CA that was the last independent bookstore in the community. Here's the Vallejo Times article on its closing.
End on a positive: Bashar Salame, 27, is opening a new location of the Little Professor chain of independent bookstores in Plymouth, MI. In an interesting twist on the impact of chains on independents, Salame says, "Initially, I just wanted to open a cafe and serve coffees, teas, fresh juices and small sandwiches," added Salame. "But, one of my favorite places is Borders and Barnes & Noble, to sit and read a book or magazine and have a drink. The size of the building will allow me to have both."
